Orig. patterned wrapps., 8vo., 59pp., two portrait illustrations, list of those helping Burns in the compilation, ‘This book is published for the benefit of the author by his friends’. It contains many anecdotes relating to bare knuckle boxers in the later part of the 19th century in America.

Born in 1857 Burns went to work on the Erie canal, in Buffalo, with his uncle when he was nine, and met and was befriended by Mike McCoole, a prizefighter friend of his uncle. Burns met Mark Twain on one of his paddle-boat trips in the company f his uncle and McCoole. Burns continues as a cabin boy on a paddle steamer and watching fights involving McCoole including two against Tom Allen. He met and was friendly with Frank and Jesse James though he did not know who they were until after a bank robbery the following day. 1 copy in Bibliothèque et Archives Canada / Library and Archives Canada
