Daniel Dodd [English painter and engraver fl. 1752–c.1780] attributed to
Buckhorse ye noted bruiser 1760-1775
Mezzotint, trimmed to plate mark, inscribed in ink on the print in an early hand ‘John Smith - Boxer’, mounted and inscribed below in ink ‘used to walk about streets with sticks in his hands with one of which allowed himself to be struck on the face for a certain sum’.
250 by 352mm (9¾ by 13¾ inches).
The Free Society exhibition of 1769 lists by D.Dodd - Buckhorse, a sketch in crayons. In 1769 the same title is used for a portrait by Master Dodd. Intriguingly, other pieces are described as by Mr Dodd. It is therefore conceivable that the picture is in fact by his son D. P. Dodd who along with Daniel Dodd’s daughter exhibited at the Free Society from 1768 [see Neil Jeffares, Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800 - online version]. Confusingly in the 1773 exhibition at the Free Society a picture of the same title is recorded again and this time as by Daniel Dodd.
