Naughton was a famous sporting writer, who specialised in covering boxing. In 1886 he went to America working for the San Francisco Chronicle.In 1887 he wrote highly commended write-ups of the John L Sullivan-Paddy Ryan and Burke- Dempsey fights. He introduced Peter Jackson to America. Naughton later wrote of the battles of Sullivan and Kilrain as well as Sullivan and Mitchell in Florida. He was present when Corbett took the championship from Sullivan and at Carson City when Corbett lost the championship to Bob Fitzsimmons. His book ‘Kings of the Queensberry Realm’ is well renowned.
