John C Haley studied with Hans Hofmann in Germany in the 1920s and became an important and influential art instructor at the University of California, Berkeley, one of the most innovative art departments in the country at that time. Hofmann’s influence permeated the “Berkeley school” of abstract expressionism that sprang up on the West Coast, of which Haley was a crucial member.

Haley and photography Haley spent time with Ansel Adams in 1958/1959 studying with him in Yosemite and quickly absorbed his techniques.  The images he produced after this meeting are highly accomplished and show Haley’s love of his surroundings and an increasing use of abstraction.  The fact that John Haley is a fine photographer, and studied under Ansel Adams seems to have gone un-noticed in his career biographies.  There is no record of this photographic work having been exhibited in his life-time.  We are offering a collection of over 350 vintage prints, which are probably the bulk of the images he would have printed and are from the estate.
