Gorbal boys

Circa 1945

185 by 245mm (7¼ by 9¾ inches)

Related to the fully finished watercolour: Scottish City - The Gorbals 1945, pen & ink, watercolour & gouache on card, 552 x 800mm, exhibited in the Redfern Gallery and acquired by the British Museum. It was probably produced in 1945 when Minton was living in studio accommodation at 77 Bedford Gardens, London with the two Scottish artists, Robert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde. It shows Minton's assimilation of Picasso in the flattened shapes of the children's heads in the foreground and his response to Colquhoun and MacBryde's figurative expressionism. Minton was fascinated with the romanticism of the urban landscape. There is a gouache of the same year entitled 'Children of the Gorbals' owned by the Northampton Town and County Art Society

Provenance Dr. Lee Dameshek, oncologist, Pittsburgh gift from his uncle Dr. William Dameshek, Boston Ma., pioneering oncologist and educator. He lectured on a world-wide basis so it’s likely he bought it during a trip to England. Some light edge toning from old mount board. Acidic mount and backing removed by restorer Crystie Wyld., reframed by Newis Frames
