Pedlar Palmer (1876-1949) held the Bantamweight Championship title from 1895-9. The son of a bare-knuckle champion in Essex, as a child he had taken part in stage acts and used some of the things he had learned on stage in the boxing ring.
Dave Sullivan, an Irish-American took the World Featherweight title in 1898 in a controversial bout against Dolly Smith, who broke his arm, in the 5 round match. His loss in this match with Palmer’s was his first.
